LCSC men's tennis is at No. 19; women climb to No. 16
5/3/2011

If the prelude to the final NAIA Tennis Coaches Top 25 polls are any indication, the Lewis-Clark College men should be headed the NAIA National Tournament for the 12th straight year, but the Warrior women’s streak of 14 straight appearances is in serious jeopardy.

Despite finishing second in their unaffiliated group tournament, which serves as a qualifier for the national tournament, the Warrior men fell one spot in this week’s poll to No. 19. The Warrior women were third in their tournament and rose five spots into a tie for 16th.

Although most conference tournaments, which serve as national qualifiers, have been played, the final NAIA tennis polls don’t come out until next week. The polls will be used to determine the 12 men and 10 women at-large berths to nationals.

The LCSC men currently stand 10th among the at-large teams in the rankings and therefore would qualify for nationals, which will be held May 17-21 in Mobile, Ala. The Warrior women, however, are 11th and would have to move past Shorter of Georgia in the final poll to qualify.

Shorter is ranked No. 15 in the poll with 156 points, while LCSC is tied with Indiana Wesleyan for 16th with 139 points. Indiana Wesleyan won its tournament to earn an automatic berth in the 24-team national tourney.

On the men’s side, LCSC has 127 points, which is five points ahead of No. 20 McKendree and 12 points ahead of No. 21 Tennessee Wesleyan.  The No. 22 team, SCAD of Georgia, had 109 points. To qualify for nationals, LCSC can’t have these three or any three at-large teams pass it in the final poll.

The final rankings come out next Monday and only the LCSC men have  match between now and then as the Warriors will face Whitman on Sunday in Walla Walla, Wash.
