MOBILE, Ala. – The Lewis-Clark State College men’s tennis forced a pair of tiebreakers in doubles play, but unfortunately wound up falling in both and suffered a 6-3 setback to Lindsey Wilson in the opening round of the NAIA National Tournament on Tuesday.
Lindsey Wilson, which is located in Columbia, Kent., is ranked No. 14 in the NAIA and will now play No. 3 seed Auburn Montgomery of Alabama in the Sweet 16. LCSC, which is ranked No. 19, finishes its season at 10-9 overall.
At No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, the Blue Raiders jumped out to big early leads, only to have LCSC rally. The Warriors’ No. 1 doubles team of Ivan Krijanto and Benjamin Robert trailed 6-3 in their match before rallying to tie it at 8-8. Viktor Svoboda and Anders Tischer trailed 7-4 before winning four of the next five sets to also force a tiebreaker.
The Blue Raiders, however, won both tiebreakers to claim the win.
Robert and Svoboda picked up singles victories for the Warriors, while Cesar Uauy and Lincoln Gay rolled to an 8-0 win in doubles.
In the four singles matches the Warriors lost, two of them went into three sets and lasted for more than two hours.
“A very determined effort all through the lineup,” Warrior coach Kai Fong said.
The Warriors only had one senior on the squad this year in Olive Stone Sindayigaya. Of the eight players that saw action for LCSC on Tuesday, three were juniors, two each were freshmen and sophomores, and Sindayigaya.
It was LCSC’s 12th straight appearance at the national tournament at 21st overall.
Lindsey Wilson improves to 15-5 on the season.
