Warrior women's tennis team is headed for nationals
5/7/2012

The Lewis-Clark State College women’s tennis team has received an at-large berth to the 2012 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship, held May 15-19 in Mobile, Ala., the national office announced on Monday.

The Warriors remained at No. 14 in the final NAIA poll, also released on Monday, and received the ninth of 10 at-large bids. LCSC, 7-14 on the year, will be making its 18th appearance overall and first since 2010. It will be LCSC’s 12th appearance at nationals since the NAIA moved to a team qualification format.

“Last year they missed making it by two spots, so all year they’ve been working really hard to get back to the national tournament,” said LCSC head tennis coach Kai Fong. “By getting this at-large it fulfills their goal, but now that they’ve qualified we have to reset our goal and go perform at nationals.”

Seeding and first-rounds pairings for the 24-team tournament will be announced on Tuesday.

“The top eight teams will be very competitive and the top five could probably be a little out of our league, but it doesn’t matter how good they are,” Fong said. “We just need to focus on how we perform there.”

Monday didn’t bring good news for all of LCSC’s tennis players though as the Warrior men’s tennis was ranked just one spot too low to receive an at-large berth.

“I know they’re disappointed, but this year will probably pump them up to work a little harder for it next year.”

The LCSC men remained No. 19 in the final poll and with 129 points were 14 points behind No. 18 Campbellsville (Ky.) which received a total of 143. Campbellsville garnered the 10th and final at-large bid on the men’s side.

Last season the opposite scenario unfolded as the LCSC men earned an at-large berth while the women narrowly missed the cut.
