MOBILE, Ala. – The Lewis-Clark State College women’s tennis team opened the NAIA National Championships in dominant fashion on Tuesday. The No. 14-ranked Warriors swept No. 19 University of Northwestern Ohio by a score of 9-0.
“We pulled out four tie-breakers to clinch the 9-0 sweep,” head coach Kai Fong said. “It is nice that everyone got a win at nationals considering that half of the Warriors are newcomers to Mobile.”
LCSC’s No. 1 Dominika Jasova, the No. 10 singles player in the NAIA according to the ITA rankings, started the singles contests off on the right foot with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep, however, not all of the matches were won that easily.
Dorothy Chong (at No. 2 singles), Miranda Duggan (No. 4), and Bryn Oliveira (No. 6) each came out on top after narrow tie breaks. Chong won her tie breaker 12-10, Duggan won 11-9, and Oliveira was victorious 10-8.
In doubles, LCSC took Nos. 1 and 2 smoothly and then battled its way to a 9-8 win at No. 3.
Northwestern Ohio, which was making its first appearance at the national tournament, ends the season at 16-10 overall.
With the win, the Warriors improve to 8-14 and advance to the second round where they’ll face No. 3 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Wednesday at 7 a.m., PDT. Fong described the difficulty of the challenge awaiting his young team very succinctly.
“Tomorrow is an uphill climb with oil on the slopes.”
