MOSCOW - Freshman Josh Shrewsbury became the second member of the Lewis-Clark State College track team to meet an NAIA Indoor National Meet qualifying mark when he finished second in the elite mile run at the University of Idaho Vandal Indoor Meet on Friday night at the Kibbie Dome.
Shrewsbury ran a personal best 4:20.74 in the race, which qualified him for next month's national meet on March 4-6 at Johnson City, Tenn.
Shewsbury's teammate, Fernando Esparanza, finished sixth in the race at 4:25.21. Esparanza was actually ahead of Shrewsbury until the final 200 meters when he tightened up and had to slow down, LCSC coach Mike Collins said.
Esparanza qualified for the national meet a week earlier in the same event with a time of 4:21.35.
LCSC will have more competitors try to hit qualifying marks at the Runners Soul Open on Saturday, also at the Kibbie Dome.
