Marks qualifies for finals in 5,000 at nationals
MARION, Ind. – Lewis-Clark State College freshman Dave Marks placed second in his preliminary heat in the 5,000-meter run to qualify for Saturday’s finals at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Indiana Wesleyan University on Friday.
Marks posted a time of 15 minutes 19.61 seconds and was edged at the tape by Malone’s Paul Robinson, who finished in 15:19.51. There were three preliminary races and the top four finishers in each of the heats advance to the finals, along with the top other four times for the 16-person finals.
Marks was one of two competitors on the day for LCSC. The other was Kristin Smith, who finished 17th in the shot put with a throw of 42-8.75, setting a personal best. Smith finished fifth in her heat with the throw, but was unable to advance to the finals.
The Warriors will have senior Lindsay Szybura compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase finals, Smith in the discus, and Klettke in the 1,600 on Saturday..
LCSC sent six athletes to the meet – Tanner Smedley and Marks on the men’s side, and Kyli Astle, Kelsey Klettke, Szybura, and Smith on the women’s side.
