SPOKANE – Lewis-Clark State College junior Dave Marks qualified for the NAIA national meet in the 5,000 meters on Saturday with a solid performance at the WAR V meet at Spokane Falls Community College.
“We’re pretty pleased with the result, as he (Marks) and I both agree that he is not fit yet, so having a performance like that today bodes well as he continues his progression in training,” said LCSC track and field head coach Mike Collins about Marks.
Marks, a native of Lake Oswego, Ore., ran the course in 14:45.06 which was good enough for second overall against stiff competition including athletes from a number of NCAA Division I schools.
The meet, which uses a scoring system of all schools participating from Washington against schools from Oregon, Idaho, and Montana, saw multiple Warrior athletes do well.
Kelsey Klettke continues to improve after taking a year off because of an injury. The junior claimed eighth in the 1,500 with a time of 4:51.92, her best time so far this season by nearly seven seconds.
In the men’s 1,500, Pauric McLaughlin claimed 18th overall with a time of 4:04.78. He was followed by Jacob Wimpenny who came in at No. 33 with a personal record of 4:20.75.
Kale Schmidt, who qualified for nationals in the 400 hurdles a week ago, narrowly missed a school record in the 110 hurdles this week with a time of 15.95.
In field events, Tyler Bracket set a school record in the pole vault with a score of 13-05.25. He claimed ninth overall.
Next week the Warriors will compete at two separate competitions. The teams decathletes will compete on Tuesday and Wednesday at Spokane Falls CC, and a small contingent of Warriors will travel to a meet at Whitworth University in Spokane on Thursday.
