SPOKANE, Wash. – Lewis-Clark State College’s Sam Atkin, Kaytlyn Coleman, and Dave Marks qualified for the NAIA national outdoor meets at the Buc Scoring Event, a two-day meet hosted by Whitworth University that wrapped up on Friday evening.
Atkin, a sophomore from Lincolnshire, England, qualified in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:49.44 despite snowy conditions and the fact that he lapped the entire field. Teammate Nick Pierson finished third with a time of 16:11.07. Atkin also took second in the 800 (1:59.02).
Coleman, from Kennewick, Wash., qualified in the discus with a third-place distance of 141-11 (43.27). The freshman also took second out of 20 athletes in the hammer and improved her national qualifying mark with a throw of 172-07 (52.60).
Marks, a senior from Lake Oswego, Ore., had a national qualifying time of 3:54.94 in the 1,500. He placed second overall out of 25 runners. Pauric McLaughlin was eighth with a time of 3:59.66.
In other events, Kelsey Klettke took third in the 5,000 (18:24.19) and Justin Keller was fifth in the decathlon with a total score of 4,951.
Including John Murray who qualified in the hammer last week, the Warriors have now had four athletes qualify for the outdoor national meets, held May 23-25 in Marion, Ind.
