LCSC cross
country teams roll to titles at own
invitational
10-20-07
With
each team placing at least five runners in
the top 10, the Lewis-Clark State College
women’s and men’s cross country teams rolled
to titles in the Warriors’ only home meet of
the season, the LCSC Invitational, held
Saturday at Lewiston’s Hells Gate State
Park.
Sweeping the top three places, led by a
personal best from senior Jenny Jensen, the
Warrior women rolled to the title with 23
points. Carroll College was second at 73,
while Great Falls was third at 78.
On the
men’s side, LCSC senior Calin Hantau
(pictured left) shaved nearly 20 seconds off
his winning time from a year ago and was one
of four Warriors to finish in the top six to
propel LCSC to the title with 17 points.
Carroll again was second at 74, while
Westminster was third at 84.
LCSC
coach Mike Collins said he was pleased with
both his 17th-ranked women’s team and No.
8-ranked men’s team in the Warriors’ final
tuneup before the Region I and Frontier
Conference championship meet, which will be
Nov. 3 in Olympia.
“We
had a nice recovery week from a hard week of
workouts and from my standpoint, we were
much, much fresher today,” he said. “I
thought we looked good.”
Jensen
(shown left), who set a personal best by
breaking 18 minutes for 5 kilometers for the
first time, won in 17:57. She broke away
early and was never challenged in the race.
Kyli Astle was second in 18:23, while Emily
Perkins was third in 18:25 to lead a Warrior
1-2-3 finish.
“My
goal was to run my best time,” said Jensen,
who has won three meets this season.
“Mentally, I felt really strong.”
Jensen, who sat out last season, says her
new outlook this year has helped her, both
with running and in school.
“I
went through some struggles personally and
had to make some life changes,” Jensen said.
“I want to have a good year.”
“Jenny
is a great testament to getting a second
chance and taking advantage of it,” Collins
says. “She’s always been a good runner. This
is only the fifth time that we’ve had a
female runner go under 18 on this course and
the last two I had were NAIA All-Americans.
That tells you something right there.”
Lindsay Szybura and Katie Loevslett from
LCSC finished seventh and 10th,
respectively, and rounded out the Warriors’
scoring in the women’s meet, which featured
five full teams and athletes from various
schools. Collins said at least five women
runners set personal bests in the meet.
On the
men’s side, Hantau was the Warriors’ top
finisher again, covering the 8 kilometer
course in 24:57. He was pushed the first
half of the race but eventually broke away
and won by 14 seconds. Teammates Aaron
Galbraith, Eric Tuwei, and Sean Huey
finished fourth through sixth, respectively,
and Adrian Ramirez and Chris McConnell, were
ninth and 10th to give LCSC six runners in
the top 10.
Collins says he was pleased that LCSC’s top
four runners finished within a minute of
each other and the next two runners weren’t
far off that pace. He said a good measuring
stick of a team’s strength is see how far
off the time is of the Nos. 5-7 runners with
the top runner.
“We
had six of the top 10 runners and I thought
we might have a shot at 8 out of the 10 but
I really didn’t know what other schools
had,” Collins said. “We saw some pretty good
efforts today.”
The
Warriors now will train for two weeks to
prepare for the combined Region I and
conference meet. The meet serves as a
qualifier for nationals and although the
LCSC men will be favored, the women’s team
is ranked No. 3 in the region and will need
a strong showing to make nationals, Collins
said.
