Warrior harriers fall in final poll
11/8/2009

Despite running away with their third consecutive Frontier Conference meet titles on Friday, both the Lewis-Clark State College men's and women's cross country teams fell in the final NAIA Cross Country Coaches' Top 25 poll for 2009, the NAIA announced on Sunday.

The Warrior men, who swept the FC meet with the top five finishers, fell from No. 10 to No. 14, while the women fell from No. 11 to No. 16. Both teams won the titles by more than three minutes over their nearest competitors.

LCSC coach Mike Collins said after the meet that the course was slow, which led to slower times. Those times likely played a factor in both teams dropping in the final poll.

The Warrior men finished with 371 points and were 18 behind both Shorter College of Georgia and Cornerstone University of Michigan.  Shorter was 13th in the previous poll, while Cornerstone made the leap to No. 12 after just receiving votes in the previous poll.

The Warrior women had 334 points and were one of three teams to drop five spots in the poll.

The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences.

Both Warrior teams qualified for the NAIA Cross Country National Championships on Nov. 21 in Vancouver, Wash. The complete list of team and individual qualifiers will be released on Monday by the NAIA.
