LC men climb seven spots to No. 11
10/6/2010

The impressive finishes this season by the Lewis-Clark State College men’s cross country team started to pay off Wednesday, as the Warriors jumped from No. 18 to No. 11 in the NAIA Cross Country Top 25 Coaches’ Poll. The women’s team also bumped up one spot to No. 19.

“I am a bit surprised at how much the men went up,” LC coach Mike Collins said. “There are probably 12 or 13 really good teams in the country and this puts us among them.”

LC achieved the greatest rank increase of any team by moving up seven places and earning 111 more points than last week. Led by Frontier Conference runner of the week Dave Marks, the Warriors have earned second and fourth place finishes in their past two races. The men’s poll, which is led by Southern Oregon University, also saw 10 teams drop in rank this week.

A seventh-place performance at the Willamette Invitational last weekend was enough to propel the women’s team to No. 19 in this week’s poll. LC earned 279 points, edging out Cedarville University by one point for the 19th spot. The No. 1 rank has not changed yet this season, still belonging to Biola University which received 24 of 25 first place votes.

“I thought the women’s team would drop back a little bit, so I am surprised by their ranking as well,” Collins said. “It is interesting that we beat Concordia this past week and they are still ranked one spot ahead of us.”

The Warriors will have a week off from competition before traveling to the Inland Empire Championships Oct. 16 in Cheney, Wash.
