The Lewis-Clark State College men’s cross country team is ranked No. 13 in the NAIA Cross Country Coaches Preseason Top 25 Poll, while the Warrior women continue their impress streak with a No. 16 ranking.
The polls, which came out Wednesday, were voted on by NAIA coaches across the country.
The Warrior men are the four-time Frontier Conference champions and are the favorite to win it again. LCSC drew 297 votes in the poll. Southern Oregon received 14 of the 18 first-place votes for the top spot in the poll. The Cascade Conference had five of the top 18 teams in the poll, while LCSC was the only Frontier team to be ranked. Rocky Mountain received the most votes of teams that didn’t make the top 25.
On the women’s side, LCSC continued its streak with the most consecutive appearances in the poll with 94, dating back to Sept. 21, 2001. LCSC is one of only two schools that have an active streak of 50-plus appearances in the poll. Azusa Pacific, ranked No. 2 in the preseason, has 74 consecutive appearances.
Two-time defending national champion Cal State San Marcos received 16 of the 18 first-place votes to lead the women’s poll. FC member Carroll, which defeated LCSC at the conference meet last year, is ranked No. 14, while LCSC is No. 16. The Warriors did bounce back to finish ahead of Carroll at nationals a year ago.
The Warrior men lost three varsity runners from a year ago while the women return six of their top seven runners from a year ago.
The Warriors open their season on Sept. 3 at the Whitman Invitational in Walla Walla, Wash.
