The Lewis-Clark State College men’s cross country team moved up two spots from the preseason, while the women’s team dropped three places in the first NAIA Cross Country Coaches’ Top 25 polls of the regular season, which came out Wednesday.
The Warrior men climbed to No. 11 in the poll with 352 points, only 11 points behind No. 10 Aquinas of Michigan. The LCSC men swept the top seven places as the season-opening Whitman Invitational on Sept. 3.
The LCSC women, who were missing several runners, finished second in the Whitman Invite and fell to No. 19 with 224 points. It’s the 95th straight week LCSC has been ranked in the women’s poll, the best in the NAIA.
Some of the Warriors are taking part in the Puffer Butte Fun Run and Field Spring State Park near Anatone, Wash., this Saturday. LCSC resume competitive action on Sept. 24 in the Eric Anderson Memorial at Spokane Falls Community College.
Reigning national champion Southern Oregon received 16 of the 18 first-place votes to hold down the top spot in the men’s poll. Fellow Frontier Conference member Rocky Mountain is ranked No. 25, while Great Falls received votes.
On the women’s side, Azusa Pacific earned 15 of the 22 first-place votes to hold down the top spot, while two-time defending champion Cal State San Marcos is second. Carroll is at No. 16, while Rocky Mountain received votes.
