The Warriors finished behind Washington State, ranked No. 20 in the NCAA, and Gonzaga, while they finished ahead of both Montana and Eastern Washington in the nine-team meet.
On the women’s side, LCSC was sixth behind five NCAA Division I teams. LCSC’s top two finishers, freshman Sophie Bush and junior Chelsey Leighton, both set personal bests in the 5-kilometer race.
Oribo covered the men’s 8-kilometer course in 24 minutes and 31 seconds to finish as the top non-NCAA Division I runner in the meet. Teammate Cody Glad, a freshman, set a personal-best and was 20th in 25:08, while Sam Atkin was 25th in 25:13.
LCSC coach Mike Collins said he was pleased the Warrior men’s improvement over the past three weeks. He said LCSC finished much further behind Gonzaga three weeks ago than it did in Friday’s race.
“This was a good race for us,” he said. “I tried to encourage them (the team) to run as if they had nothing to lose. We closed the gap on Gonzaga and beat two Big Sky teams, which is very encouraging. I think it shows our ranking (No. 6 in the NAIA) is legitimate.”
On the women’s side, Bush broke her previous 5K best by 13 seconds and finished in 18:25. Leighton was close behind at 18:34. Madison Randall and Amanda Palmer finished 42nd and 44th, respectively for the Warriors, ranked No. 15 in the NAIA.
Collins said he’s happy with the women’s performance, especially with the two personal bests.
“We have really pushed the pack mentality with them so those two personal best are forcing the rest of the girls to get better,” Collins said. “The girls are really buying into this and focusing on the conference meet. I’m really encouraged.”
Collins said he was impressed by both of his squads after tough workouts this week.
“They should have been really tired because we ran hard Tuesday and Wednesday so they only had one day off before racing on Friday,” Collins said. “I’m a little surprised how fast we ran.”
The Warriors will hold their only home meet next Saturday in the Warrior Invitational at Hells Gate State Park.
