The Lewis-Clark State College women’s cross country team fortunately only fell two spots in the final NAIA Women’s Cross Country Coaches’ Top 25 poll and appear to have grabbed an at-large berth for the 32-team NAIA national meet, which is scheduled Nov. 19 at Fort Vancouver National Historical Site in Vancouver, Wash.
The Warrior women finished second in the Frontier Conference race to Carroll, which received the conference’s automatic berth to nationals. There are 23 automatic qualifiers for the 32-team national race and one host berth, which goes to Concordia, leaving just eight at-large berths. According to the poll, LCSC would receive the No. 7 of the eight at-large berths.
Although the official announcement for who qualified doesn’t come until Monday, the Warriors were the ranked No. 16 in the final NAIA poll, marking the 102nd straight time the Warriors have been ranked in the poll. LCSC also was eighth in order of ranked teams that did not receive an automatic berth to the meet, seven of which are located in the West.
The Warrior men already know their fate and held on to the No. 7 spot in the men’s poll as the top seven positions went unchanged from a week ago. The Warrior men bagged their fifth straight conference title last week and earned an automatic berth to nationals.
If the women qualify, LCSC is the only NAIA school to send both teams to the national meeting in each of the past six seasons. If the women get in, it will mark the 11th straight year the Warriors have competed at the NAIA meet, while this will be the 10th straight national meet for the LCSC men.
Oklahoma Christian held on to its unanimous No. 1 ranking the men’s poll with 591 points, while Azusa Pacific earned 20 of the 22 first-place votes in the women’s poll for the top spot.
The NAIA will announce all team and individual qualifiers for the national meets on Monday afternoon.
