Mier’s perfect
day powers LCSC to 11-5
win over St. Martin’s
2-24-07
Senior
catcher Jessie Mier went 5-for-5 and drove
in four runs to help the Lewis-Clark State
College baseball team to an 11-5 win over
St. Martin’s University and the title of the
Guardian Plumbing, Heating, & Air
Conditioning Tournament at Harris Field on
Saturday.
Mier’s
performance, along with home runs from Zach
Adam and Eric Epperson, kept the Warriors
undefeated in the tournament (4-0) and on
the season (8-0). The four-team round-robin
tournament wraps up Sunday at 11 a.m. with
Western Oregon University taking on LCSC.
St. Martin’s
defeated Western Oregon 14-7 earlier
Saturday to finish tournament play at 1-3.
Western Oregon is 1-2 in the tournament,
while Missouri Western Also finished 1-2 in
tournament play. St. Martin’s is 3-12 on the
season, Western Oregon is 4-5 and Missouri

The Warriors,
who have now outscored the opposition 77-14
this season, did see the pitching staff’s
consecutive inning scoreless streak snap at
18 when St. Martin’s scored four runs in the
sixth inning to make 9-4. St. Martin’s also
added a run in the ninth inning for the most
runs scored in a game against the Warriors
this season.
Mier, batting
fifth in the lineup, paced the Warriors’
11-hit attack with four singles and a
double. He had an RBI single in the third, a
run-scoring double in the sixth and a
two-run single in the seventh.
Adam and
Epperson both picked up their first home
runs of the season with back-to-back shots
in the fifth inning. With one out and a
runner on second, Adam smashed a two-run
blast to left field. Epperson followed with
a solo shot to right. Adam finished with two
hits, while Epperson also drove in a run in
the third inning on a ground out.
The Warriors
had plenty of opportunities to do damage at
the plate as four St. Martin’s pitchers hit
seven batters and allowed four walks. LCSC
also stranded 11 in the game.
LCSC used six
pitchers in the game, four of which only
pitched an inning. Despite struggling with
his control, LCSC starter Chris Schwinden
earned the win and struck out three and
walked three in three innings of work. Joe
Guntz struck out two in two innings and
Brian Bird and Allen Dixon also had strong
relief appearances.
Curtis Thibault
had a three-run double to end the streak of
18 straight scoreless innings by Warrior
pitchers.
After this
weekend, the Warriors return to action
Thursday in the six-team SPORT Physical
Therapy Banana Belt Tournament. Also taking
part will be Washington State, Gonzaga, Air
Force, Southern Utah, and Utah Valley. Each
team will play four games in the tournament,
which will run through next Sunday. |
