Warriors Complete sweep of Concordia
3-11-07
Brent Wyatt went 3-for-4 with four RBI
and three runs scored to pace a 20-hit
attack as the Lewis-Clark State College
baseball team completed a four-game
series sweep of Concordia University of
Portland with a 16-7 win at Lewiston's
Harris Field on Sunday.
The Warriors, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA,
improve to 16-1 on the season with their
fourth consecutive win, while Concordia
falls to 2-10. The win marked the 14th
time this year LCSC has outscored an
opponent by at least six runs.
Despite tying a season-high in runs and
collecting a season-best 20 hits, the
Warrior pitching staff had its worst
outing of the season, giving up season
highs in runs, hits, and walks. LCSC
used four pitchers in the game and only
the fourth, Will Morgan, was effective.
Concordia scored two runs in the first
inning, marking the first time LCSC has
been scored on in the first, and led 4-1
going into the second. LCSC took a 5-4
lead in the bottom of the fifth, but
Concordia tied the game in the top of
the sixth. The Warriors then broke the
game open with a 10-run sixth inning.
Wyatt hit two home runs in the game
while teammate Beau Mills smacked his
sixth home run as every Warrior starter
but one had at least one hit.
James Mannion hit a two-run home run off
LCSC starter Brad Schwarzenbach in the
first inning and two errors in the
second made it 4-1.
In the LCSC fifth, Wyatt and Mills went
back-to-back with home runs to tie the
game at 4, and Paul Martin's RBI
sacrifice fly made it 5-4.
In the bottom of the sixth, LCSC
collected 10 hits to score its 10 runs.
Dick Knutz and Mark Thompson hit
back-to-back doubles to start the
scoring, and Wyatt followed with his
second home run of the game. Jessie Mier
and Bryson Tajiri had RBI doubles in the
inning, while Martin added an RBI
single. Knutz hit a two-run double his
second time up, while Wyatt later added
an RBI double.
Knutz and Tajiri also finished with
three hits apiece and Knutz drove in
three runs. Mier and Martin added two
RBI apiece.
Schwarzenbach gave up seven hits and
four runs (two earned) in 3.2 innings.
He struck out two and didn't give up a
walk. Joe Guntz went two-thirds of an
inning and gave up two hits and three
walks, while Jared Joaquin pitched 2.2
innings and gave up five hits, three
runs and one walk. He also struck out
three and picked up the win to improve
to 2-1 on the season. Morgan threw two
innings of hitless relief and struck out
two.
LCSC now hits the road for the first
time this season and will face Albertson
College in a three-game series in
Caldwell, starting Friday. LCSC and
Albertson will play at 1 p.m. on Friday,
Saturday, and Sunday in a three-game
series.
