February 26-27, 2007

The
start of the 2007 season for the LCSC golf
team began at home at Clarkston Country Club
and Quail Ridge Country Club. The event
structure played out so that day one would
consist of eighteen holes at Clarkston
Country Club and day two would be a further
eighteen holes at Quail Ridge Country Club.
Both courses where in good condition however
a little wet due to the weeks periodic
nightly rain showers, Which intern softened
up the greens for more aggressive play, a
welcome relief from the previous weeks cold
conditions which had left the greens rock
hard. The event was an individual stroke
play tournament where both LCSC teams got to
match their skills with those of NCAA
division one teams. The host of the
tournament was Washigton State University,
with other participants being University of
Idaho, University of British Columbia and
University of Victoria. The tournament
strictly speaking does not count towards
LCSC’s ranking in NAIA however it was a good
opportunity for both LCSC women and men’s
team to compare them selves to the skill
level of the rather talented oppositional
teams. The men’s team competed well on both
days and where above expectations. Notables
where Jason Humphrey who shot a 67 on day
two, Jeff Ray who shot a 68 on day two to
finish even par for the tournament and
Patrick Cassabonne who shot 71 on day two to
finish two over for the tournament. The
performances where good, I would prefer to
say excellent however if all goes to plan
excellence will be driving both women’s and
men’s teams home in the next tournament at
Clarkston.

Hello
all,
This
is Samara just making my routine diary entry
now that our first tournament is complete.
This is just the beginning to a promising
spring season with high expectaions.
The
weather was looked to be dreary for our
first tournament of the year. Channel six
said that rain and even snow were possible
for Monday morning and that chances of
showers Tuesday was likely. I woke up Monday
in one of those I don’t want to golf in the
rain moods and as I walked upstairs all I
saw was the sunlight. My mood rose and I was
ready for our first tournament of the year.
The Inland Cup is hosted every year by WSU
and this was the second year it was to be
played at the Clarkston Country Club. The
competition ranged in the girls bracket from
the University of Portland, to the
University of Idaho, WSU and ourselves.
Usually we make this tournament into a
“let’s start off the spring with a bang.”
Day
one for me consisted of many shots, some
pretty, some not so pretty. The front nine
was a mess. I really just felt out of rhythm
and for some reason I was more nervous than
usual. As a team we decided to make season
goals, tournament goals and personal goals.
And as of the front nine I knew my
tournament goal and personal goal of scoring
decent and hitting greens wasn’t going to be
accomplished. But Noah didn’t build his boat
in one day either. The back nine I seemed to
get into the swing of things. Scoring became
somewhat easier but not yet natural. At the
end of the day one could see my struggles by
the 87 I shot. Knowing this wasn’t good
enough I knew my goals would have to be met
the second day at Quail Ridge.
Again
it was forecast to rain most of the day but
somehow we got finished right before the
calm of the storm turned into the rain.
Seeing as I missed all, yes all the greens
on Monday my goal was to better my greens in
regulation by over 100%. My actual goal was
to hit 9 greens for the day while not making
any three putts. My tournament goal was to
better my score by at least eight and shoot
in the seventies. Tuesday turned out to be
colder than Monday but I was just happy it
wasn’t raining yet. After my first two holes
I was thinking my day just maybe the same as
Monday seeing as I missed both greens and
made bogey but the third hole, #12 gave me
hope. Not only was I on in regulation but my
putting seemed to be clutch. After the first
nine was over I had already hit five GIR, I
was excited. Plus I was only 4 over. The
next nine went even better. I made my goal
by hitting 11 GIR for the day. My 78 wasn’t
the greatest round but its still early in
the season and we have a lot of practice
till the real fun starts. As a team we all
improved on the second day and everyone said
they felt more confident with one tournament
under our belt. Because the Inland Cup is an
Open and not team play we couldn’t rank
ourselves against the rest but as
individuals we faired fine against the
division I schools.
Our
next tournament isn’t until the end of March
and will again be held at the Clarkson
Country Club. This tournament is our annual
invitational and will give us some stiff
competition. Come out and watch March 19th
and 20th we would be grateful to
have some cheering spectators. Till then we
may see you around on one of the local
fairways practicing hard but don’t hesitate
to stop and give us a few pointers.
J
Cheers
Samara
