LCSC men's golf team closes in on Rocky Mountain

04-21-08

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- The Lewis-Clark State College men's golf team continued to cut into Rocky Mountain's overall lead in the Frontier Conference on Monday and now only five strokes separate the two teams as they go into the final 18 holes.

In the final 54-hole conference tournament, which is being played at WingPoint Golf Course, the Warriors were able to make up more ground on the Bears during the first 36 holes on Monday by firing a team score of 581, compared to 586 for Rocky Mountain. That means only five shots separate the two teams heading into Tuesday's final round.

The conference holds five tournaments during the fall and the spring and the team score from each tournament is added to form an overall team score. After the fall season, Rocky's lead was more than 50 strokes, but LCSC was able to cut it to 11 at its portion of the conference tournament last week in Lewiston.

LCSC was able to shoot a 2-under-par 286 during the second 18 on Monday as Chris Kneen and Scott Mooney both shot 2-under-par70s, while Jeff Ray and Patrick Casabonne shot 1-over 73s.  Kneen, a freshman from the Isle of Man, also carded a 73 in the opening round and is the overall leader. Nic Arrenbrecht and Ray are close behind at 145 and 146, respectively.

On the women's side, the Warriors put their two best rounds together on Monday, firing a 317 and a 318. They trail Rocky Mountain by one shot after Rocky shot identical rounds of 317. Rocky has a commanding overall lead in the conference standings and appears to be headed to its second straight women's golf title.

Junior Juanita Villa had the best round of the day for LCSC with consecutive 76s, which leaves her three shots behind the leader, Rachel Warren of Rocky Mountain. Warren had the best round of the day with a 70 and also carded a 79.

All the conference teams will take part in the Region I tournament, which will be held next Monday and Tuesday at the Coeur d'Alene Municiple Golf Course.
