WALLA WALLA -- The Lewis-Clark State men's basketball team rebounded from
an out-of-tune offensive showing the night before to claim a 69-55 victory
over host Whitman in the Wildhorse Resort Tournament on Saturday evening.
The Warriors got a game-best 23 points from Danny Allen; a 15-point,
10-board double-double from Martin Brothers; and 12 points from John Moore,
who recently cracked the starting lineup.
L-C, 8-4, built a 40-27 edge at halftime, thanks to Allen's
buzzer-beating 3-pointer.
The Missionaries, 2-5, rallied in the second half, crawling to within six
points late in the game. But Moore answered with a baseline drive and dunk.
"That I thought crippled them," Warriors coach George Pfeifer said.
L-C limited Whitman to 23-for-56 shooting. Guards Ian Warner and Matt
Kelly, who led the Missionaries with 42 combined points the night before,
managed just 10 points on 1-for-12 shooting. Pfeifer credited the defense of
Allen and Spencer Bishop for keeping the pair in check.
Injuries struck the Warriors again. Chris Pitts had a hip flexor injury
flare up in the first half, and he sat the rest of the game. And L-C was
without Skyler Wilson, who sprained an ankle the night before.
With Moore and Jared Tikker in foul trouble in the second half, the
Warriors' supply of big players was limited.
"We were forced to zone them when we were playing pretty good man,"
Pfeifer said. "But I think it was a testament to our kids that they were
able to fight through that."
Pfeifer said Wilson and Pitts will sit out next weekend's home
doubleheader with Malaspina of British Columbia.
