Western Oregon keeps L-C off boards;
Huge rebounding disparity proves costly for
Warrior men at tourney

SALEM, Ore. --
The Warriors fared pretty well in most
statistical categories Friday night, but one
stat was lopsided -- and game-turning.
Lewis-Clark State
collected 31 fewer rebounds than Western
Oregon did, and the Warriors dropped a 62-57
decision at the Corban College Classic.
The tournament is
following a predetermined schedule, with the
Warriors facing host team Corban at 8
tonight.
Six of Western
Oregon's nine players nabbed at least one
offensive rebound as the Wolves outdid L-C
in that category 19-3. Overall, the board
disparity was 46-15.
"We just kept
allowing them second opportunities,"
Warriors coach Tim Walker said.
So it didn't matter
than L-C (9-2) shot 52 percent in the first
half or pulled off 11 steals, including four
by Eric Durrett.
J.T. Mitchell scored
17 points for the Wolves (4-3), and Stanley
Radcliff added 16.
Spencer Bishop and
Jared Tikker led the Warriors with 15 points
apiece, and Jamal Harris notched four
assists and three shot-blocks.
In explaining
Western Oregon's rebound domination, Walker
cited not a big man but a point guard --
Kevin Tyner, whose driving ability left
Warrior defenders out of position.
"He's jet-quick and
he breaks your defense down," he said.
With the score tied
57-57 with about 90 seconds left, the
Warriors blew a scoring opportunity
underneath, and Tyner converted a
three-point play that put the Wolves in the
lead for good at 1:21.
