Warriors can't catch Griffins

 2-4-07

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Lewis-Clark State men needed to rally in the second half, and their offense was up to the challenge. They shot 54 percent from the field, went 12-for-12 at the line and mustered 45 points.

But the Warriors' defense -- usually their bread and butter -- couldn't stop Westminster.

The Griffins answered every L-C threat and collected a 73-69 Frontier Conference win Saturday night.

After rattling off 11 consecutive victories, the Warriors are now faced with a two-game losing streak. Still, the NAIA's No. 21 team sits at 17-6 overall and 6-2 in the FC.

"We just couldn't get over the hump," LCSC coach Tim Walker said. "It was a hard-fought, rugged, rough game. Our guys battled and they played hard. That's all I can ask."

Despite their consistent scoring, the Warriors trailed Westminster the entire second half. L-C trimmed the deficit to three points, but got no closer.

The Griffins (13-10, 5-3) built their lead with a two-minute flurry to close the first half. They stretched what had been a two-point lead to eight thanks to a pair of 3-pointers -- including one from Tanner Gregory that beat the buzzer.

"That really hurt us, going down eight instead of being down two or even," Walker said. "And we just couldn't get even, although I think our team played very hard."

The Warriors' top scorers lived up to their billing as Teran Lee notched 19 points and Mike Gordy added 17. Napoleon Gordon came up with 11 points, which included a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute that made things interesting.
