Carroll ends L-C's 11-game win streak

1-28-07

HELENA, Mont. -- For a brief moment, the Lewis-Clark State men had completed their comeback from a 20-point deficit to claim a one-point lead.

And then the moment was over.

Carroll wiped away the Warriors' lead with three consecutive baskets, and the Saints went on to a 69-62 Frontier Conference win Saturday night.

The setback ends an 11-game win streak for the 17th-ranked Warriors. LCSC (17-5, 6-1) had a chance to take a commanding lead in the conference, but is now tied for first with No. 25 Carroll (16-6, 6-1).

"We did exert a lot of energy coming back," Warriors coach Tim Walker said. "It was, I don't know, almost surreal, because we took the lead and it was like we couldn't even get excited about that. And then we gave it right back and we couldn't get it back."

LCSC did forge a 60-60 tie with a little over two minutes left. But after two free throws from Carroll's Chad Vaculin, the Warriors' Rob Comer and Teran Lee both missed 3-point tries.

The Saints' Eric Henkel iced the win with a three-point play with 50 seconds left.

Henkel paced the Saints with 22 points. Chris Kaschmitter, a Grangeville product, scored three points before fouling out.

The Warriors were paced by Lee (19 points) and Chris Pitts (17). Mike Gordy managed just four points, ending his streak of 20-point games at four.

Walker said he hopes this loss, "wakes us up."

"We've kind of been on a little bit of a downhill slide emotionally," the second-year coach said. "These guys have to find a way to get that edge back. We're still playing hard and giving a great effort, but we've got to get that edge back mentally where we come out and really attack people."
