Defense helps LCSC men defeat Biola 63-47

  12-15-06

LEWISTON, Idaho – Led by a strong defensive effort, the Lewis-Clark State College men’s basketball team shut down Biola University 63-47 in a non-conference matchup at the LCSC Activity Center on Friday night.

Biola, 6-3 overall, came into the game averaging better than 80 points per outing, but never could get things going against a tough man-to-man defense used by the Warriors, 7-4 overall. LCSC forced 22 turnovers and held Biola to just 18-of-63 shooting from the field for 28.6 percent.

LCSC coach Tim Walker said he stressed all week the importance of denying passes into the low post and to guard against the 3-point shot. The strategy paid off when the Warriors slapped several Biola passes and held the Eagles to just 2-of-14 at the 3-point line.

“Our defense played very well tonight,” Walker said. “It may not have been pretty, but we’ll take it.”

This is the seventh time this season LCSC has held an opponent to 56 or less points and the third time to less than 50.

The Warriors hit 25-of-58 shots from the field for 43.1 percent and were 10-of-15 at the foul line.

Mike Gordy led the Warriors with 15 points, while Chris Pitts had nine points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Teran Lee added 11 points, three rebounds, three assists, three steals and one blocked shot.

Rocky Hampton had 11 points and 14 rebounds for Biola, while teammate Spencer Foster had 10 points and Danny Jones added 10 boards, but the team’s leading scorer entering the game went 0-for-8 from the field.

LCSC resumes action on Wednesday and Thursday night in a pair of doubleheaders against the University of Fraser Valley at the Activity Center. The women’s teams play at 6 p.m. both nights, followed by the men’s game at 8 p.m.
