Well balanced L-C bombs Argos

 3-1-07

BUTTE, Mont. -- Precision and balance -- that's all it took for the Lewis-Clark State men to record a win in the Frontier Conference tournament Wednesday.

Five players scored in double figures as L-C coasted to an 82-59 triumph over Great Falls at the Maroon Activity Center.

"I thought we shared the ball well," L-C coach Tim Walker said. "We executed well in both halves and score the ball well."

The Warriors (24-6) now await a semifinal matchup with Montana-State Northern or Rocky Mountain, who play today.

The winner will then battle the Warriors Friday at 7 p.m.

It took some time, but L-C, which swept the Great Falls during the regular season, finally created some separation at about the 10-minute mark of the first half. After that, the LCSC's torrid shooting buried the Argonauts.

The Warriors connected on 50 percent (20-of-40) of their field goal attempts, staking a 45-26 heading into halftime.

L-C didn't cool off after the break, either. In fact, the Warriors were slightly better, connecting on 51 percent (15-of-29) of their shots.

Steve Thompson paced the effort with 13 points, while Mike Gordy (12), Napoleon Gordon (12), Chris Pitts (11) and Teran Lee all reached double figures.

Walker was also pleased with his club's defensive effort, even though the intensity level dropped slightly toward the end of the second half.

L-C forced 18 turnovers and allowed the Argonauts (12-19) to shoot just 39 percent.

"We played fair defense," Walker said. "That was the key all year to us being successful, so hopefully our effort and that energy continues. That will give us a chance to be successful."
