LCSC men fall to MSU-Northern 70-65

2-15-08

HAVRE, Mont. -- A strong surge to start the second half helped put the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team in the lead and the Skylights withstood a couple of Lewis-Clark State College rallies to claim a 70-65 win over the Warriors in Frontier Confernce play Friday night.

The loss was the first conference road loss of the season for LCSC.

The loss dropped the Warriors, ranked No. 13 in the NAIA, to 16-7 overall and 7-2 in conference play. The setback also knocked LCSC out of sole possession of first place in the conference standings. Rocky Mountain now holds a half-game lead over LCSC based on playing one more conference game. Rocky Mountain, LCSC, and Westminster all have two conference losses this season.

MSU-Northern improves to 6-4 in conference play and 16-8 overall.

LCSC led 35-34 at halftime, but Delvaughn Tinned hit a 3-pointer to start the second half for MSU-Northern to spark a 21-7 run for a 55-42 lead with 12 minutes remaining. The Warrior managed to cut the lead to 58-52, but Tinned hit another 3-pointer.

MSU-Northern increased its lead to as much as 11, but a 3-pointer by Rob Comer cut the margin to five points with less than 2 minutes remaining during a 7-0 run that cut the margin to 63-60 with 1:14 left.  After a Napoleon Gordon putback neutralized two free throws by MSU-Northern to make it 65-62, LCSC's Brian Duckworth was called for a questionable foul and Travis Noble made both free throws with 30 seconds left to make it 67-62.

After another MSU-Northern free throw, Comer hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to three, but Tinned countered with a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left for the final.

LCSC is now 2-7 on the season when allowing 66 or more points in a game.

Jonathan Daly, Comer, and Gordon all finished with 13 points apiece, while Mike Gordy added 12. Daly had 11 of his 13 points in the first half, while Gordon scored 10 in the second half.

Tinned finished with a game-high 28 points, including 16 in the second half when he had seven of MSU-Northern's 11 field goals.

The first half featured streaks by both teams. After MSU-Northern scored the first four points, LCSC answer with nine straight for its largest lead at 9-4. Northern responded with a 10-2 run and also eventually led by as much as five, 22-17, before LCSC grabbed a 35-34 halftime edge.

The Warriors return to action on Saturday night as they travel to Great Falls to play the University of Great Falls, which stands last in the conference standings. The game will tip-off at 7 p.m., Pacific time.
