Despite being upset in the semifinal round of the Frontier Conference Tournament, the Lewis-Clark State College men’s basketball team remained at No. 5 for the fifth straight week in the final regular-season NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, announced Wednesday by the national office.
With the ranking, the Warriors (26-5) are in fine position to receive an at-large berth and a relatively high seed at nationals. The field of the 32-team tournament, which will be held in Kansas City, Mo., on March 13-19, is comprised of 15 automatic berths and 17 at-large selections. The official championship bracket will be announced via a graphical selection show at approximately 5:30 p.m., PST, at www.NAIA.org.
Rocky Mountain College, the fifth seed in the conference tournament, defeated the Warriors 89-80 in the semifinals last week and then stormed on to take down second-seeded Montana Western 68-52 in the title game in Dillon, Mont., on Tuesday.
Rocky Mountain, which receives an automatic bid to nationals because of the tournament title, didn’t receive any votes in the poll, however, the conference was well represented. Montana Western climbed from No. 15 to be tied for No. 13, MSU-Northern dropped from No. 20 to No. 24, and Westminster received votes but remained just outside the top 25.
Columbia (Mo.) once again held down the top spot. With a 33-0 record, the Cougars were the unanimous No. 1 pick for the eighth-straight week.
The postseason Top 25 Poll will be announced on March 26.
