Pioneers Need OT to Defeat Warriors, 111-105
LEWISTON, ID--The Lewis & Clark College Pioneers need overtime to defeat the Lewis-Clark State College Warriors, 111-105, in the fourth game of the Clearwater River Casino/KOZE Tournament, Saturday night at Warrior Gymnasium.
The third-ranked team in NCAA Division III were led by preseason All-America Scott Davis’ 26 points. Colin Oriard notched a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Pioneers (2-1). John Mietus added 19 points and nine rebounds while Jeff Auxier tallied 21 points.
Beau Barney scored a season-high 24 points to lead the Warriors (1-2). Sta’Fon Lawson, Brian Meneely, and Josh Wilson all added 18 points apiece. Lawson pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Jason Brazier chipped in with 16 points.
The Warriors trailed by as many as 11 points, early in the first half, but a 15-3 run over three and a half minute of the first half, gave LCSC its first lead, 29-28, with 8:29 left in the half. The Pioneers took a 47-45 lead in to the half on Mietus’ layup with four seconds left on the clock.
Lewis & Clark lead throughout the second half, until Barney hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 73 with 5:33 left in regulation. At the 4:17 mark, another trey by Barney put the Warriors ahead, 78-75. The lead went back-and-forth, and with 11 seconds remaining, Brazier made the front end of a two-shot foul to leave the game tied at 88.
In overtime, Auxier nailed a three-pointer to put the Pioneers ahead for good, 93-90, with 4:02 left in overtime. Lewis & Clark made all seven of its shot in the extra session while Lewis-Clark State made 8-of-14.
In the early game, NAIA Division I’s 16th-ranked Westminster College Griffins rolled to a 90-61 win over The Evergreen State College. Westminster won both of its games in the tournament, but because this was ran in a classic format, no champion was declared.
Brad Willden led the Griffins (5-4) with 29 points and nine rebounds. Todd Christensen added 20 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Matt Sparrow tallied 17 points and dished out six assists.
Andre Stewart led Evergreen (2-3) with 15 points. Mike Parker and Quincy Wilder added 11 and ten points, respectively.
The All-Tournament Team was announced after the fourth game.
