Four Warriors
Taken in MLB Draft

After a
47-8 season, and winning their 14th national
championship, the Warriors had high expectations for the
2006 Major League Baseball Draft. Overall, the NAIA had 24
players picked by Major League teams, and 4 of them were
from Lewis-Clark State College. Warriors selected include
LCSC’s middle-infielders, Justin Fuller and Matt Vogel, and
two starting pitchers, Shannon Wirth and Austin Weilep.
Taken in
the 11th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Justin Fuller was
the earliest selected Warrior. As a senior during 2006,
Fuller hit .352 while driving in a team leading 50 runs, and
hitting 21 doubles. His 2006 accolades include being named a
first team All-American, and winning the NAIA World Series’
Charles Berry Hustle Award.
Shortstop
Matt Vogel was taken in the 30th round by the Seattle
Mariners. Vogel hit .376 during the season, and collected a
team leading 73 hits. The senior was also an honorable
mention All-American during 2006.
Pitchers
Shannon Wirth and Austin Weilep, who had a combined 2006
record of 13-1, were selected in the 32nd and 34th rounds
respectively. Wirth and Weilep, juniors, were both taken by
the Texas Rangers. Wirth in 14 starts and 15 appearances
went 7-1 on the year with a 2.96 ERA. Weilep, going a
perfect 6-0 in 14 appearances, held down a 3.72 ERA.
