Warriors crank up the
defense again in rolling
past UBC-Okanagan
10-27-07
For
the second straight day, the
Lewis-Clark State College
women’s basketball team
showed the havoc it can
cause on defense by forcing
40 turnovers to roll past
the University of British
Columbia-Okanagan 98-32 at
Clarkston High School’s
Kramer Gym on Saturday.
The Warriors, who forced 49
turnovers in a 96-46 win
over the Lakers on Friday
night, again pressured the
Canadian visitors by using a
variety of presses and
traps. The defenses helped
LCSC to 27 steals, which led
to numerous fastbreak
opportunities and also wore
down the Lakers, 4-5
overall.
LCSC, 2-0, rolled out to a
54-16 halftime and then held
UBC-Okanagan scoreless for
the opening nine minutes of
the second half to take an
81-16 advantage. The
Warriors led by as much as
69 in the game, but UBC’s
Kim Whelpton hit a 3-point
shot at the buzzer to put
the Lakers in the 30s and
the final margin at 66.
Senior post Mandy Troutt of
Pullman nearly had a
double-double at halftime
with 19 points and nine
rebounds. She finished with
her first double-double as a
Warrior with game-highs of
22 points and 13 boards. She
went 9-of-12 from the field,
had three steals, and one
blocked shot.
The Warriors had four
players reach double figures
in the game. Breianna Gaines
added 15 points and five
steals, while Vanessa West
and Jade Fulbright had 13
points apiece. West had
seven rebounds, while
Fulbright added five steals
and three assists.
Katie Hart led the Warriors
with six steals and seven
assists. Sadie Short
finished with nine rebounds
and three assists, while
Lacie Titmus had nine
points.
Every Warrior scored at
least four points, and nine
of the 10 had at least two
rebounds.
LCSC shot 50 percent from
the field, 42-of-84 and
grabbed 25 offensive
rebounds, which led to
several second-chance
scoring opportunities. LCSC
had more offensive rebounds
than UBC had total rebounds.
The Warriors outboard the
Lakers 51-24.
Along with forcing
turnovers, the Warrior
defense didn’t allow many
open looks at the basket.
The Lakers were just
14-of-45 from the field,
31.1 percent.
Bailey Radley led UBC-Okanagan
with eight points.
For the weekend, the Warrior
defense forced 89 turnovers,
held the Lakers to an
average of 39 points per
game, and just 27-of-79
shooting from the field, for
34.2 percent accuracy.
LCSC returns to action next
Sunday in an exhibition game
at Boise State University.
The Warriors then will play
at Azusa Pacific and Hope
University on consecutive
nights on Nov. 9 and 10 in
California.
