Lewis-Clark State College is ranked eighth in the first installment of the standings for the 2012-13 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup, an award presented annually to the NAIA program that excels across the breadth of sports it offers.
Developed jointly by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today, points are awarded toward the Director’s Cup in up to 12 sports – six men’s and six women’s.
National champions receive 100 points, second-place finishers earn 90 and so on.
Only the results of the cross country season have been factored into the first set of rankings, so the Warrior women’s eighth-place finish and the men’s 15th-place finish at NAIA Nationals on Nov. 17 accounts for the 111 points amassed by LCSC.
The Warriors were awarded 66 points for the women’s cross country team and 45 on the men’s side.
British Columbia, whose women’s cross country team won the national title, received 100 points for that championship, and 72 points for the sixth-place finish of its men's squad for a combined total of 172 points that leads the rankings.
Cal State San Marcos (165 points), St. Francis of Illinois (154), Oklahoma Baptist (152) and College of Idaho (147) round out the top five programs in the standings.
LCSC is the higher-ranked of the two Frontier Conference programs in the 47-team field, as Carroll College slotted ninth, just behind Lewis-Clark State. The Cascade and Chicagoland conferences were the only other leagues in the NAIA to have more than one school represented in the rankings.
The next installment of the Director’s Cup standings will be released on Dec. 13.
