WARRIOR ASSISTANT
HEADS TO CUBA FOR INTERNATIONAL
COMPETITION
LCSC’s Picone
Returns to Baseball Canada Having Led the
Junior National Team to Gold in 1984
Oct. 10,
2003
Lewis-Clark State Assistant Baseball
Coach Gary Picone has heard the message
loud and clear from his homeland…we need
you.
The
longtime assistant to LCSC Head Coach Ed
Cheff has been given the responsibility
by
Baseball Canada of leading the
Canadian National Senior Team to the XXXV
Baseball World Cup in Havana, Cuba on
Oct. 12-26.
Picone,
who has a long history with Baseball
Canada, returns to international
competition after an 18-year absence.
In 1984, he led the National Junior Team
to a gold medal finish at the World
Junior Championships. Picone has
played with or coached in the national
program on six different occasions.
International competitions such as the
World Cup are crucial to the success of
national baseball programs, such as
Baseball
Canada.
By competing in international
competitions,
Canada
earns points toward qualifying for
Olympic Games. Because the Canadian
government funds Olympic Sports, by
qualifying for the Olympics, Baseball
Canada will receive additional revenue
for government sources. Team Canada
will attempt to qualify for its first
Olympic Games at the Olympic Qualifier in
Panama City,
Panama on Oct. 30 to Nov. 11.
Several members of the Senior National
Team that will compete in the World Cup
tournament will travel to Panama for the
qualifier.
Picone’s
association with Lewis-Clark State
College began in 1973 when he first
donned the Warrior uniform under Head
Coach Ramon Hooker. In 1976, Picone
was a member of the Warriors first team
to appear in the NAIA World Series.
From 1991 to 2000, he served as Athletic
Director at LCSC before returning to the
coaching ranks at Washington State
University.
Team
Canada will open the World Cup against
Nicaragua on Oct. 13. As a member
of Group A Canada will play host country
Cuba on Oct. 19 during the round-robin
portion of the tournament. On Oct. 15,
Coach Picone and Team Canada face off
with Chinese Taipei. This meeting
will be the second time in less than a
year that Picone as faced a team from the
Chinese Taipei Federation. As a
member of the Lewiston Truckers, Picone
participated in a three-game exhibition
with the Chinese Taipei in August at
Harris Field in Lewiston,
Idaho.
