How blazingly hot was the Warriors' shooting touch on Thursday night? Even their relatives were burying outside heaves.
Connecting on 51.7 percent of its field-goal attempts, the Lewis-Clark State women's basketball team got at least three points from all 10 of its players. The result was a slow-developing blowout: LCSC bolted past Rocky Mountain 92-68 at Warrior Gym.
Earlier in the week, the Warriors (19-7, 7-3) dipped out of the NAIA's top 25 rankings for the first time this season. And with Frontier Conference pacesetter Carroll College coming to Lewiston on Saturday, this game had a heightened sense of importance.
"I think we've lost a lot of games we could have competed in," freshman point guard BreAnna Mulvey said. "We were just ready. We need to win all our games up until (the) conference tournament."
Shaking off a recent chilly stretch, Mulvey tallied 18 points and seven assists. But on this night, she wasn't responsible for her family's most memorable moment. In a halftime shootout for fans, John Mulvey, her father, swished a 25-foot flat-footed 3-pointer to win $450 worth of diamonds.
"He gets excited for that," Mulvey said of her father. "He stays until halftime (of the men's game) to shoot the shot, and then he goes home."
Although the Warriors led nearly the entire game, Rocky Mountain stayed tethered to them. On a running fling by Ashley Griffith, the Bears made it 68-61 with 9:28 left.
But L-C pulled away from there, scoring 14 of the next 16 points. That included a 3-pointer by senior Jessica Foot that put her over the 1,500-point barrier for her career.
A fair amount of the Warriors' points came cheaply. They flashed a variety of full-court defenses, which forced 31 RMC turnovers and led to transition buckets.
LCSC went with the press because of the Bears' susceptibility to turnovers. But that wasn't the only reason.
"I've had people asking about Carroll all week," Warriors coach Brian Orr said, "and I wanted to make sure that we stayed focused on this game. And I think one of the best ways to do that is come out and press."
Foot, who has spent the last few weeks leaping milestones, finished with 18 points. She is now four 3-pointers away from passing Rosie Albert for second on LCSC's career list.
Cami Kalbfleisch added 17 points, Elise de Groot came off the bench for nine points and Grangeville native Leah McCauley "had her best game since coming back from knee surgery," Orr said, recording seven points and five rebounds.
With about two minutes remaining, Kalbfleisch was called for a technical foul for elbowing Ashley Griffith after Griffith had fouled her. While he isn't looking for more technicals, Orr said he appreciated his team's passion.
The Bears "are aggressive -- they're an aggressive team. And I think it kind of sends a message: 'Hey, we're not going to take that.' "
