Warriors stomp Canadians; Kalbfleisch, Baker key L-C's 85-37 rout of Thompson Rivers

In her 3 1/2 seasons at Lewis-Clark State, Cami Kalbfleisch has planted 187 tries from 3-point range -- the fourth-highest total in school history. When her career ends in the spring, the Lewiston native will be remembered for her perimeter touch.

And for those paying close attention, her accuracy doesn't just manifest itself in outside bombs. Kalbfleisch also has an impressive ability for tossing on-the-money passes to teammates in the post.

That talent was on display Friday night, as Kalbfleisch doled out eight assists. The Warriors pocketed an 85-37 blowout of Thompson Rivers before a sparse crowd at the Activity Center.

LCSC, 12-2 and ranked 16th in the NAIA, will complete its nonconference schedule with another game against the visitors from Kamloops, British Columbia. That contest will tip off at 2 this afternoon.

Most of Kalbfleisch's feeds went to Ashley Baker, who struck for 30 points on 14-for-19 shooting.

The two were especially in sync early on. With the Wolf Pack's defenders playing in front of the 6-foot-3 Baker, Kalbfleisch and the other LCSC passers tossed lobs to their junior post, who heaved in point-blank layups.

By halftime, Baker had 16 points, Kalbfleisch had five assists and the Warriors had a 25-point edge.

"I think it's something that she's developed, but she's always had a knack for it," L-C coach Brian Orr said of Kalbfleisch's passing touch. "And being 6-foot tall out on the perimeter, that's definitely an advantage to it."

When it comes to lobbing a pass to a fronted post player, "sometimes it's just a matter of having the courage to throw it," Orr said. "It looks like they're guarded, but they seem to come down with it most of the time."

L-C's other inside menace, junior forward Aundrea Morrison, tormented the Wolf Pack with her offensive rebounding. The first-year Warrior grabbed 11 boards, nine of which came on the offensive end. She finished with 17 points.

Kalbfleisch also scored some baskets of her own, hitting 3 of 7 from 3-point range on her way to 13 points. Jade Fulbright added 12 points.

But Orr wasn't thrilled with L-C's performance against the 4-13 Wolf Pack. The Warriors hit just 4 of 15 3-pointers, and sauntered through a few uninspired moments in the second half.

Those deficiencies obviously weren't costly. But they could be deadly when LCSC opens the Frontier Conference season on Thursday at Carroll College.

"I want a sense of urgency right now, especially coming into conference play," Orr said. "Not taking anything away from Thompson Rivers, but we know we've got some tougher competition waiting for us next week. And we've got to be at our best right now."
