LCSC claims
Frontier League title with 58-50 win over
Carroll
2-22-07
Jade Fulbright
scored 18 points and Ashley Baker added 16
to help the Lewis-Clark State College
women’s basketball team capture a 58-50 win
over Carroll College to wrap up the Frontier
Conference title in a contest of two Top
10-ranked NAIA teams at the LCSC Activity
Center on Thursday night.
The Warriors,
who have now won 19 straight games, improve
to 27-1 overall and 13-0 in conference
play. The NAIA’s second-ranked team will
attempt to complete a perfect league season
for the first time since the 1999-2000
season when it plays host to Rocky Mountain
at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Carroll, which
came into the game ranked No. 9 in the
country, falls to 26-3 overall and 10-3 in
the conference. Entering the week, Carroll
still had a chance to tie LCSC for the
league title, although the Warriors had
already clinched the tiebreaker at the top
seed into the conference tournament, which
begins next Wednesday in Butte, Mont.
The Warriors,
however, put an exclamation point on the
title with a solid defensive game and strong
play from both Fulbright and Baker during
critical stretches of the game. LCSC held
Carroll to just 18-of-58 shooting from the
field, 31 percent, and also forced 20
turnovers.
Fulbright
stepped up big in the second half with 12 of
her game-high 18 in the second half. She hit
on 8-of-14 shots from the field and also had
two steals. Baker added 10 points in the
second half as she finished 7-of-15 from the
field and a team-best 8 rebounds. Fulbright
and Baker were a combined 15-of-29 from the
field, while the rest of the team was
8-of-23.
LCSC point
guard Katie Hart added six points, seven
assists, three steals and four rebounds,
while Vanessa West added seven rebounds, two
assists and two blocked shots.
As a team, LCSC
was 23-of-52 from the field for 44.2
percent.
Carroll was
paced by Amy Brooks, who finished with 12
points and 12 rebounds, but hit just 5-of-24
shots from the field. Hannah Heidenreich
added 10 points.
LCSC will open
the conference tournament on Wednesday
against No. 8 seed Great Falls. The rest of
the tournament pairings won’t be decided
until after the regular season ends on
Saturday night.
