L-C 'survives' Westminster; Warrior
women prevail 62-57 in first game
without Morrison
2-4-07
SALT LAKE
CITY -- Although the Lewis-Clark
State women clearly missed Aundrea
Morrison in their first game without
her, the Warriors showed they are
still a capable bunch.
Katya
Yancheva, who replaced Morrison in
the starting lineup, scored a
career-high 22 points to help
second-ranked LCSC gut out a 62-57
win over Westminster on Saturday
evening.
"We just
survived," Warriors coach Brian Orr
said. "That's what we did."
The
Warriors also extended their winning
streak to 14 games. They are now
22-1 overall and 8-0 in the Frontier
Conference.
This was
LCSC's first game since losing
Morrison, an All-America post, to a
knee injury last Saturday.
The
Warriors held the lead most of the
way, but had to fight off the
Griffins down the stretch. Over the
final six minutes, L-C got a handful
of clutch plays -- 3-pointers from
Janeen Nelson and Madison Mendezona;
a driving score from Yancheva; a
steal and breakaway layup from Jade
Fulbright -- to secure the win.
"What I
told the girls is obviously we
didn't play very well," Orr said.
"But the quality of a good team is
to make plays when you have to, and
that's what we did tonight."
But even
when the Warriors were canning those
clutch buckets, they failed to ice
the win at the line. During the last
three minutes, they went 4-for-9 at
the stripe and missed the front end
of three 1-and-1 situations.
Yancheva,
a 6-foot senior from Sofia,
Bulgaria, added four assists and
three rebounds to her big scoring
night.
LCSC also
got 11 points and nine rebounds from
Ashley Baker, who fouled out.
Fulbright and Kim Preston tallied
seven points apiece.
The
Warriors were outrebounded 38-29 --
an area where Morrison specialized.
There is
a slight possibility that Morrison
could return for the Warriors in the
national tournament. In the
meantime, LCSC will have to alter
its approach.
"All the
players ... they kind of got
together and they all understand
that everybody's got to step up,"
Orr said. "It's not just one player
that's going to fill the role.
Everybody needs to do a little bit
better job."
NOTES --
Orr said that half the team,
including himself, was under the
weather on Saturday night. ... The
Warriors will probably stay ranked
No. 2 in the next NAIA Division I
poll. No. 1 Vanguard of California
won both its games this week.
