Fulbright sparks LCSC women in conference opener

1-6-07

Responding to a talk from her coach, junior guard Jade Fulbright (pictured left) scored a season-high 20 points to help the Lewis-Clark State College women’s basketball team kick off Frontier Conference play with a 79-47 victory over Westminster College at the LCSC Activity Center on Saturday night.

With the playing status of senior guard Janeen Nelson unknown earlier in the week, LCSC coach Brian Orr said he talked with Fulbright about being more of an offensive threat. Fulbright, the leader in steals and one of the top defensive players on the team, responded with a 7-of-13 effort from the field to lead four Warriors in double figures.

The win lifts LCSC, ranked No. 4 in the NAIA, to 15-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Griffins of Salt Lake City fall to 12-5 and 0-1.

Fulbright hit two 3-pointers early in the game to help LCSC take an 18-9 lead. Westminster cut the lead to six, but the Warriors increased it to 34-21 at intermission. In the second half, Westminster cut it to nine early, but Fulbright scored on a lay-in and then on consecutive three-point plays to spark 25-4 run and put the game out of reach.

Ashley Baker and Aundrea Morrison, LCSC’s solid 1-2 punch inside, both finished with 12 points, while Katya Yancheva, starting for Nelson, finished with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Katie Hart, the fifth starter, tied a season-high with 10 assists.

Nelson, who injured her leg in the Warriors’ game last Saturday, saw limited playing time after being cleared to play earlier in the day. The injury kept her out of practice all week. Sophomore Kim Preston did miss Saturday’s game because of the flu.

For the game, LCSC hit 32-of-60 shots from the field for 53.3 percent, and held a 40-26 rebounding edge. The Warrior defense also held Westminster to just 16-of-50 shooting (32.0 percent), including 2-of-21 at the 3-point line (9.5 percent).

Mara Hoskins led Westminster with 11 points, while BreAnne Haslam added 10.

The Warriors return to action on Friday in Great Falls, Mont., against the University of Great Falls at 5 p.m.
