"Do
the difficult things while they are easy and do the
great things while they are small. A journey of a
thousand miles must begin with a single step."
-Lao
Tzu
Many people use
the journey metaphor for life. Tonight I had my creative
writing class. My professor, acclaimed author Claire
Davis, referred to the famous quote, "there are only two
stories: a man goes on a journey, or a stranger comes to
town."
In August, five
strangers came to town, but it never felt that way. They
are more like family members I have never met. Together
we have embarked on a journey that will last the next
five months. Coach took us on a "team bonding" trip to a
WSU football game. We shared blankets and hot cocoa, it
was sweet. But we bond every day, sharing in the pain
and sweat of practice and the weight room.
This past
weekend we opened the season against UBC-O. As a team,
we probably hit the floor as many times as we scored. It
was a fun weekend, and it gave us an understanding of
who we are. We are fast and furious. Every loose ball
was ours and every player showed up to play. It was fun!
Goals are
important to success, and we have been setting the bar
high for what we want to achieve this year. We’ve also
been filming some commercials and posing for pictures at
our player-sponsor photo reception. I will reference our
Scholarship Club many times throughout the year. This is
a phenomenal group of people that support our team
financially, but also emotionally. Especially this time
of year, their support is greatly appreciated. During
the holiday season in the months of November and
December, most of us don’t get to see family very often.
The great folks in the Scholarship Club give us food for
our tummies and good company that can’t be matched
anywhere else. Over the past couple weeks we have had
three or four recruits and the first thing we tell them
is how these great people are, and how they make LCSC
feel like home.
Our journey has
begun. Every season is a journey, every journey is a
lifetime. And we’re going to play for the innocence of
it, we’re going to play for the love of the game. We
begin one step at a time, one practice at a time, one
game at a time.

the week:
"Teach it to
your kids; never let anyone cut in front of your face."

starting the Coach Orrism of the week. These are things
that Coach says all the time, and can be quoted by any
player.)
