LCSC heats it up to remain alone in first place

1-18-08

BUTTE, Mont. - Shooting 61 percent from the field in the second half after forcing 20 first-half turnovers, the Lewis-Clark State College women's basketball team rolled to its seventh straight victory with an 76-47 triumph over short-handed Montana Tech in a Frontier Conference contest on Saturday night.

The Warriors shot 31.4 percent in the first half, but still managed a 27-19 halftime lead because their swarming defense frustrated Montana Tech. The Orediggers had more turnovers (20) than shot attempts (19) in the first half.

In the second half, the Warrior defense kept the pressure on, and found their offense by hitting 13 of their first 18 shots of the half to open up a 30-point lead.  The Warriors finished 17-of-28 in the second half from the field, and 28-of-63 for 44.4 percent in the game.

LCSC, ranked No. 13 in the NAIA, improves to 5-0 in conference play and 16-3 overall, while Montana Tech falls to 1-4 and 7-11. Tech played the game with only eight players dressed as twins Rebecca Gimeno and Angela Gimeno left the team earlier in the week.

Without the pair, and unable to handle LCSC's pressure defense, the Orediggers finished with 32 turnovers and made just 15-of-42 shots from the field for 35.7 percent.

LCSC junior forward Sadie Short posted a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. LCSC had four players in double figures as Jade Fulbright finished with 14, while Mandy Troutt had 12, and Breianna Gaines scored 11. All 11 LCSC players had at least one rebound and 10 of the 11 scored at least one point.

Short helped LCSC hold a 42-39 rebounding edge in the game. LCSC also had 22 steals and its bench outscored Montana Tech's bench 27-10.

LCSC completes the first half on conference play next week when it plays host to Rocky Mountain on Thursday and Carroll College on Saturday. Both games tip-off at 6 p.m. at the LCSC Activity Center.
