LCSC's Short and Fulbright receive NAIA women's basketball honors

3-25-08

Lewis-Clark State College junior Sadie short was named to the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball All-America third team, while teammate Jade Fulbright received honorable mention honors, the organization announced Tuesday.

Short, a 5-foot-11 guard/forward, and Fulbright, a 5-8 senior guard from Wenatchee, helped the Warriors to a 29-5 season, which featured both Frontier Conference regular season and tournament titles, along with making it to the Elite Eight at the NAIA national tournament in Jackson, Tenn.

Both Short and Fulbright were selected first-team all-Frontier Conference players this season and Fulbright also was the MVP of the conference tournament.

Short, who played the previous two seasons at Walla Walla Community College before transferring to LCSC, started in 33 of the 34 games this season and averaged 11.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. She showed off her versatility by being able to post up opponents down low or shoot 3-pointers.

Short finished the season 162-of-365 from the field for 44.4 percent, and was 29-of-88 at the 3-point line for 33 percent. She also was 40-of-54 at the foul line for 74.1 percent. She was third on the team in assists with 86 and also had seven blocked shots and 62 steals.

Fulbright, a four-year starter for the Warriors, averaged 11.8 points and 2.5 rebounds a contest. She started every game this season and was 155-of-324 from the field for 47.8 percent, and was 32-of-97 at the 3-point line for 33 percent. She also was one of the team's top free throw shooter, hitting 80.6 percent (58-of-72).

Fulbright set the program's all-time steals record during the season and finished with a team-high 103 steals this year. Her average of just more than three steals a game ranked 12th in the NAIA. She also had 70 assists.

Jolene Fuzesy of Carroll was a second-team selection, while Shannon Evans of Westminster was on the third team with Short. Laura Keaster of Great Falls was the only other Frontier Conference player to receive honors as she was an honorable mention choice.

The teams were voted on the NAIA All-America Coaches Committee, who selected 6-4 junior Josephine Owino of Union as the nation's Player of the Year. Owino averaged 18.7 points per game and led to Bulldogs to 35 consecutive wins before they lost in the NAIA semifinals to eventual national champion Vanguard.
