Warrior women keep Lewis & Clark scoreless for over 8 minutes to win 80-59

12-1-07

PORTLAND, Ore. – With a little less than 10 minutes to go and the score tied at 57-57 in the second half, the Lewis-Clark State College women’s basketball team went on a 23 to 2 run to defeat Lewis & Clark College 80-59.

The Warriors narrowly held the lead at half time 45-43, and were up only 61-59 with 8 minutes and 34 seconds left in the game. The LCSC coaching staff credits the Pioneers’ 8-plus minute scoring draught to a match-up zone and key defensive efforts from the Warrior bench.

During the first half, LCSC struggled to contain Lewis & Clark’s senior guard Crystal Castle. Castle led the Pioneers with 26 points in the game, and 20 of them came in the first half.

Jade Fulbright was instrumental in carrying the Warriors’ lead to halftime. Fulbright matched Castle’s numbers and put up 20 points of her own. Fulbright ended the game with 20 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds.

LCSC also had three other players score in double figures. Sadie Short recorded 17 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals, Vanessa West had 15 points and 6 rebounds, and Breianna Gaines recorded 11 points and had a team leading 10 rebounds.

Junior Lacie Titmus came off the bench and came up with two timely blocks for LCSC in the second half. She finished the game with 7 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

Overall the Warriors shot 46.5 percent from the field, forced 22 turnovers, out-rebounded Lewis & Clark 41 to 25, and pressured the Pioneers into making only 7 of 21 shots, and giving up 14 turnovers in the second half.

With the win the Warriors increase their winning streak to 6 straight games and improve their overall record to 9-2 while the Pioneers drop to 3-2.

Next weekend the Warriors host the Wells Fargo Invitational at the LCSC Activity Center. The tournament should prove to be highly competitive as Carroll College, the College of Idaho, and Azusa Pacific University all come to Lewiston.

On Friday, December 7, Carroll will play College of Idaho at 4 p.m., and then the Warriors will take on Azusa Pacific at 6 p.m. This game will be followed by a men’s basketball game featuring LCSC versus Evergreen State College to round out the day’s triple header.

On Saturday, December 8, the Wells Fargo Invitational will continue as Carroll will play Azusa Pacific at 2 p.m., and the Warriors will go against College of Idaho at 4 p.m. Saturday stands as the Lewis-Clark State College women’s basketball Alumni Day.
