2008-2009 Warrior Journal

January 5, 2009

In the midst of strapping on ankle braces and tightening shoelaces this morning before practice, I took a minute to review our calendar that is filed in the front of our team binders.  I have always been the type of person who crosses off days that have been completed—it helps me remember what we have already accomplished, but also reminds me to never be satisfied with the triumphs of yesterday.  When I looked at our calendar this morning, I realized that I had not crossed off a single day since December 11th.  I feel that this is fairly symbolic of how our team’s journey has been moving along lately.  Time has been flying by, and there is so much to tell!

We have traveled near and far—after a tournament in Bellingham, WA we headed back home for the Staples Classic in Lewiston.  Over Thanksgiving break we were in a tournament in Walla Walla, WA.  From there we headed to Helena, Montana to face two foes from our conference and then, finally, made it back home for the Wells Fargo Invitational.  Some of the highlights include beating Rocky Mountain College and Carroll College in Helena and beating Point Loma Nazarene at home, when they were ranked three places above us in the national poll.  We have only had a couple losses so far this season, but the one with the most significance came in early November when we lost Madison Mendezona to a season-ending knee injury.  Although it was a terrible thing, we were all inspired by Madison’s optimistic outlook and her dedication to remaining an integral part of our Warrior family.  As we headed into finals week and the beginning of our winter break, we had compiled a 10-3 record and were on an eight game winning streak!

Winter break provided us all with the wonderful opportunity to get home and spend some quality time with family and friends.  We had the most days off—12 to be exact—that I have ever had in my career at LCSC!  However, with so much time off came the constantly looming thoughts and fears about getting out of game shape.  As much as I tried, I could not convince myself that chasing my puppy through the snow counted as a workout!  So when it came time to battle the weather and return to Lewiston, I think everyone was itching to get back on the floor.  We had five practices in before we hit the road once more, this time heading to Seattle, WA to play Seattle University.  Although it was one of the most exciting games of the season thus far, we were defeated in overtime 67-63.  There were so many players that stepped up and made huge plays in a game that saw nine ties and ten lead changes in the second half alone.  It was a great experience for all of us and an important step forward as we head into conference action this week.

On Thursday we will leave for Great Falls, Montana where we begin Frontier Conference competition.  After Saturday’s loss, Coach Orr took a marker and wrote 0-0 on the whiteboard for all of us to see.  He explained that our true test begins now, and that every team in our league is sitting at 0-0.  What we have achieved up to this point has been in preparation for these next few months.  You can bet that with that in mind we will be practicing harder than ever this week, and head into our first conference game with the heart of a champion and the poise of a Warrior.
