Warriors come in at No. 11 in first poll
12/7/2009

The hot start to the 2009-10 season for the Lewis-Clark State College basketball team was rewarded with a No. 11 ranking in the first regular season NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 poll, which was released on Monday.

The Warriors, 9-2 overall, are ranked No. 11, one spot ahead of Azusa Pacific, which is 8-2. Both of Azusa’s losses have come to LCSC.

Outside of Oklahoma City, which is ranked No. 8, LCSC is the highest-ranked team with two losses in the poll.

LCSC was ranked No. 16 in the preseason poll and its climb up by five spots ties Columbia College for the biggest leap among the top 18 teams in the poll.

LCSC had 213 points in the poll, six ahead of Azusa and 14 behind No. 10 Campbellsville of Kentucky.

Union of Tennessee holds down the top spot in the poll for the 27th consecutive week. Union, 10-1 overall, drew five first-place votes for 304 points overall, while Point Loma Nazarene, 6-0, drew three first-place votes and 300 points. St. Xavier of Illinois, 10-0, is third with 295 points and four first-place votes.

Westminster, which received votes in the preseason poll, was ranked at No. 20, while Montana Tech and Carroll College, also of the Frontier Conference, received votes in the poll.

LCSC returns to action this weekend for the three-day Wells Fargo Tournament at the LCSC Activity Center. LCSC plays Great Falls on Friday at 6 p.m., and then scrimmages an alumni team at 4 p.m. on Saturday, prior to the Great Falls against Pacific Union contest at 6 p.m. The tournament concludes on Sunday at 2 p.m. with LCSC and Pacific Union squaring off.
