LCSC serves up three-game
sweep of Montana Tech
10-6-07
Serving
an amazing total of 21 aces
in just three games, the
Lewis-Clark State College
women’s volleyball team
finished the first half of
Frontier Conference play
with a powerful 30-16,
30-28, 30-13 win over
Montana Tech at the LCSC
Activity Center on Saturday
afternoon.
The service ace mark fell
one short of the school
record of 22 set against
Rocky Mountain in the 2003
season when the Warriors
also won in three straight
games.
The victory was the ninth in
the last 10 games for LCSC
and keeps it in a
first-place tie in the
conference standings with
Westminster at 6-1. LCSC is
12-3 overall and guaranteed
its first winning regular
season in four years. The 12
wins also equal the total
wins in the last two years
for the program.
LCSC, which was picked to
finish sixth in the
conference in the coaches’
preseason poll, gave Montana
Tech, 5-2 in conference and
13-6 overall, fits with a
variety of serves. Julie
Maciboba (shown above)
finished with six service
aces, Cintia Alessi had
five, while Lindsay Scott
and Lisa Davis had three
each.
“We had 21 service aces and
only two service errors,”
first-year LCSC coach Jen
Greeny said. “That’s
incredible.”
“It’s unbelievable,” LCSC
sophomore outside hitter
Dana Christiansen said. “We
have been working really
hard on our serving. I’m
just so proud of my
teammates.”
The Warriors only struggle
came in the second game.
After an eight-point run
broke open the first
contest, the Warriors seemed
on their way to putting away
the second game with ease,
but Montana Tech fought back
and actually took a brief
lead late in the match. The
Warriors, however, responded
with a couple of aces,
including one by Maciboba to
put the game away.
In the third game, the
Warriors got on a roll early
and the Orediggers couldn’t
stop the momentum.
“I thought we came out
aggressive from the very
beginning and put the
pressure on them,” Greeny
said.
“We are playing well,”
Christiansen said. “I know
we can be great, even
unstoppable, but we are
really playing well.”
Christiansen and Anile
Clemente led LCSC with nine
kills apiece, while Scott
had eight. Christiansen hit
.467 for the match and also
had three assists. Davis had
13 assists, while Kim Fong
had 11. Alessi led the team
with 10 digs, while Davis
had eight. Brittney Kubik
had five blocks, while
Clemente added four.
“We worked together well and
our communication was the
key,” Clemente said of the
win.
Cassie Hodges had 11 kills
for Tech, while Katie Daly
added 10. Jodi Hogart had a
match-high 30 assists and
five digs, while Kristi Witt
had 12 digs. By comparison,
Tech only had four service
aces in the match and hit
.084, while LCSC hit .208.
“I don’t think we couldn’t
have expected any more than
this,” Greeny said about the
6-1 conference record. “But
the second half will be
tougher. We have five of our
seven matches on the road.”
LCSC’s next four matches
will be on the road,
starting Friday with a match
in Great Falls against the
University of Great Falls.
On Saturday, LCSC takes on
Montana State-Northern in
Havre. Both matches start at
6 p.m.
