Warriors dispose of Bulldogs
in workmanlike fashion
10-4-07
The
Lewis-Clark State College
women’s volleyball team used
strong play at the net to
outhit and outmuscle a
smaller but gusty University
of Montana-Western squad to
claim a 30-20, 30-12, 30-16
Frontier Conference victory
at the LCSC Activity Center
on Thursday night.
The win was the Warriors’
ninth in their last 10
matches and put LCSC in a
three-way tie for first
place in the Frontier
Conference. LCSC is 11-3
overall and 5-1 in
conference play. Montana
Tech, which comes to
Lewiston Saturday for a 2
p.m. contest against the
Warriors, and Westminster
also are 5-1 after
Westminster swept Montana
Tech on Thursday.
LCSC hit .362 during
Thursday’s match and had 48
kills, compared to 26 for
Montana-Western, which has
only one player taller than
5-foot-8 and is winless on
the season. The loss dropped
the Bulldogs to 0-6 in
conference play and 0-16
overall.
Despite the height
difference, Montana-Western
hung with LCSC early in the
first game by using quick
sets. After the Bulldogs
tied the score at 11-11,
LCSC scored 19 of the next
22 points to roll to the
win.
“I thought we came out
pretty flat but we were able
to win in three games,” LCSC
coach Jennifer Greeny said.
“Everyone got to play and
everyone contributed, but we
are going to have to play
with a lot more energy on
Saturday.”
Montana-Western never led in
the second game, but did
keep things close until LCSC
pulled away at the end. In
the third game, the Warriors
led 12-3 and Western could
get no closer than seven
points the rest of the way.
“Overall, I thought we
played pretty good,” LCSC
senior middle blocker
Brittney Kubik said. “We
played to our level.”
Kubik had a game-high 12
kills and hit .750 for the
match. She also added two
blocks. Lindsay Scott added
nine kills, three service
aces, and 11 digs, while
Julie Maciboba and Dana
Christiansen had seven kills
apiece. Kim Fong led LCSC
with 19 assists, while Lisa
Davis added 16, along with
two service aces and 10
digs. Cintia Alessi, still
battling an abdominal pull,
had a team-high 13 digs.
The Warriors also had eight
service aces in the game.
Montana-Western was led by
Courtney Nicholls’ eight
kills, while Stephanie
Couture added 21 assists and
13 digs. Montana-Western hit
.046 for the match.
