LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State College women’s basketball took down Warner University 82-55 on Saturday to close out the Staples Classic at a perfect 2-0. LCSC’s Sadie Short was tabbed as the tournament’s MVP, and teammate Jasmine Stohr was named to the all-tournament team.
Lewis-Clark State’s up-tempo defense again caused problems for its opponent, but this time the Warrior offense seemed to click a little bit more than it did in Friday’s low scoring win over Lewis & Clark College. Overall, the Warriors shot 42 percent from the field against Warner and had four players score in double digits.
The win moves LCSC to 4-3 on the year, while the loss bumps Warner to an overall record of 1-6.
Stohr earned a spot on the all-tournament team by collecting 17 points and five rebounds in Saturday’s contest, while Short had 13 points, six rebounds, and six assists to help solidify her tournament MVP title. Kim Preston and Lacie Titmus also worked their way to double digits in scoring, as Preston finished with 14 points, four steals, and four assists; and Titmus added 10 points.
Also named to the Staples Classic all-tournament team were Jenessa Todd and Jessie Depell of Montana Tech, Beebe Soberal of Warner University, and Kim Kittell of Lewis & Clark College.
The Warriors shot well enough and played strong enough defense to hold a 39-24 lead over Warner at halftime and to extend that lead in the second half, but LCSC head coach Brian Orr still sees room for improvement. “We need to find more consistency,” said Orr. “Everything needs to be a little tighter.”
LCSC forced 31 turnovers, but did have 17 turnovers of its own against a scrappy Warner University roster.
“We got the win,” said Orr. “Hey, we're happy, but you have to give Warner a lot of credit. They never gave up.”
Warner, out of Lake Wales, Florida, was led by Soberal’s 24 points and six rebounds, and Nakitia Prince’s 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Earlier on Saturday, Montana Tech knocked off Lewis & Clark in a 66-64 nail-biter. Lewis & Clark’s Kittell led the game with 17 points, while Lindsie Wilson led Montana Tech with 12 points and six rebounds. Montana Tech finished with a 2-0 record in the Staples Classic, and Lewis- & Clark went 0-2.
The Warriors play next at the Whitman College Tournament in Walla Walla, Wash. on Nov. 28-29.
