Spokane – The Lewis-Clark State College women’s volleyball team stormed past Montana Western 3-1 and Whitworth 3-0 on Saturday to claim the Whitworth Invite title and move to a perfect 12-0 on the season.
Pitted against Frontier Conference member Montana Western, LCSC took its first match in four games 25-14, 25-13, 20-25, 25-18, and then overpowered host Whitworth 25-21, 25-14, 25-18 in the final match day.
The Warriors led the five-team round-robin tournament with a 4-0 record, Menlo College finished second with a 3-1 mark, Whitworth went 2-2, Montana Western 1-3, and Whitman ended 0-4.
The No. 16 ranked Warriors have now won three straight tournaments and have won nine of their 12 matches by way of 3-0 shutouts.
LCSC blew by Montana Western, as Anile Clemente, who earned her second straight tournament MVP title, carried the offense with 16 kills and a .311 hitting percentage.
Julie Maciboba, also named to the all-tournament team, collected eight kills. Abby Bruya and Lisa Davis kept the offense on the attack with 23 and 17 assists respectively, and Linday Scott, after her record setting 39 digs in Friday’s match versus Menlo, led the team with 15 digs.
Montana Western, led by Theresa Bennet’s 14 kills, drops to 2-7 on the year. The Warriors will face the Bulldogs again on Sept. 13 in a home conference match.
In Lewis-Clark State’s match against Whitworth, Maciboba and freshman Josi Lyman led the way for the Warriors as they both had 10 kills and a hitting percentage of over .300. Bruya notched 20 assists while Davis had 18, Dana Christiansen had four blocks, and Scott ended with 24 digs.
After the loss Whitworth now stands at 6-2 on the season.
