had solid outing in sweep of Westminster

Idaho - Oh what some pent up frustration, a little
emotion, and a long bus ride can do for a team.
The Carroll College women's volleyball team used that
combination to sweep Westminster 25-16, 25-21, 25-21 in
the final match on Friday in the opening round of the
Bank of Whitman Frontier Conference Volleyball
Tournament at the Lewis-Clark State College Activity
Center.
The Saints, 18-9 overall, advance to the conference
semifinals where they will face top seed and tournament
favorite Lewis-Clark State on Saturday at 1 p.m. Montana
Tech and Rocky Mountain meet in the other semifinal at
11 a.m. The two semifinal winners square off at 7 for
the title and a spot in the NAIA national tournament.
Last week in the final week of the regular season,
Carroll was swept at home by both LCSC and Westminster.
The two setbacks cost Carroll a better seeding in the
conference tournament, among other things.
"I
think we had a tough week losing to both LCSC and
Westminster and that sat with us all week, that pent up
energy to do something about it," Carroll coach Maureen
Boyle said. "We didn't play with any emotion (in the
last meeting with Westminster) and we had a long bus
trip here, but we made it a quality trip. I think we
were running on all cylanders."
The Saints put together solid runs in the middle of the
three sets breaking ties of 11-11 in the first set, 8-8
in the second set, and 7-7 in the third set to take
control of each game. Although Westminster rallied to
cut the margin in the final two games, it couldn't get
over the hump.
Carroll was on the attack most of the night and finished
with 48 kills and a .258 hitting percentage, compared to
31 kills and a .124 hitting percentage for Westminster,
which finishes the season at 9-17.
"They had two hitters that really hurt us last time that
we were able to dig quite a few times tonight," Boyle
said. "They still got their kills down, but we did a
better job digging. This is a huge win for us."
Sammy Priddy led Carroll with 12 kills, while Kayla
Hughes added 10. Katie St. John had 27 assists, while
Maureen Frauenholtz had 21 digs. Carroll also outblocked
Westminster 6-4.
Westminster was led by Alison Culp's 10 kills, while
Kelsey Schaufler added seven.
Both teams are fairly young with only one senior on each
roster.
