The Lewis-Clark State College women’s volleyball team found itself in the same pool as the only undefeated team in the NAIA, a team that appears to be hitting its stride from the always tough Golden State Athletic Conference, and another that is a bit of an unknown and scored a major upset in the opening round of the NAIA National Tournament when the NAIA announced the pool pairings on Sunday.
The Warriors, ranked No. 9 in the NAIA with a 28-1 record, are in the same pool with No. 4-ranked Northwestern College of Iowa (35-0), No. 17 Point Loma Nazarene (18-12), and unranked Malone of Ohio (33-7).
The pool play portion of the NAIA National Tournament will be held Nov. 30-Dec. 4 at Sioux City, Iowa. There are six pools of four teams and the top two teams from each pool after round-robin play advance to the single-elimination bracket of the tournament.
The Warriors were one of 12 teams that received an opening-round bye in the 36-team tournament, while the remaining 24 teams played on Saturday in single-elimination play.
Malone and Point Loma Nazarene both picked up victories on Saturday night. Malone knocked off No. 13 Indiana Tech on the road in four sets and is making its first appearance in the national tournament. Point Loma rolled past Dillard of Louisiana in three sets to qualify for pool play for the third straight year and make its 13th overall appearance.
LCSC is making its fourth straight trip to the tournament and 11th overall. In the previous three years, the Warriors have been unable to advance out of pool play.
Northwestern College is making its fifth straight appearance at nationals and has made it out of pool play to the quarterfinals in each of the last three seasons.
“I’m happy with it,” LCSC coach Jen Greeny said of the draw. “Anybody that has reached this point in the national tournament is going to be tough and everyone is playing well right now. We are going to get information on the three teams and just go from there.”
The Warriors open pool play against Point Loma on Nov. 30 at 3:45 p.m., and then play Malone on Dec. 1, also at 3:45 p.m. The Warriors then conclude pool play against Northwestern at 6 p.m. on Dec. 2.
Greeny said Point Loma did play three Frontier Conference teams early in the season but that the Sea Lions were missing a couple of players with injuries who are now back so it’s hard to use film from those matches. She said LCSC is well-rested and healthy for the tournament and that it was nice not having to play a first-round match on Saturday.
“It’s been a lot less chaotic I guess is the word,” Greeny said. “In years past, you hurry and try to get film on the team that you will play that week and then make all the travel arrangements. It’s been good for us to get into the gym and just work on the things we need to work on.”
Greeny said the team did take last Monday as well as the weekend off, but will resume practice Monday, Tuesday and then Wednesday morning before the team breaks for Thanksgiving. The team will meet back up Friday morning and fly to Omaha, Neb., where it will stay Friday and part of Saturday before taking the 75-mile trip to Sioux City on Saturday night.
“We know it’s going to be a battle but we’re looking forward to it,” Greeny said.
