Graybeal is first-team NAIA All-American; Alaimaleata is on third team
12/9/2010

Nicole GraybealLewis-Clark State College’s Nicole Graybeal was selected to the 2010 Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball All-America First Team, while teammate Deddiy Alaimaleata was selected to the third team by the NAIA Volleyball All-America Selection Committee, the NAIA released on Monday.

Graybeal was one of 14 players selected to the First Team and becomes the sixth Warrior volleyball player in program history to earn the honor, joining Kelli Harris (1996), Kymm Lingnaw (1997), Joy Dunn (1999), Angela Igoe (2001), and Anile Clemente (2008).

Graybeal and Alaimaleata become the 20th and 21 Warriors, respectively to earn All-America honors. They were the only two Frontier Conference Players on the teams, although Rocky Mountain had two players earn honorable mention honors and Carroll had one.  Both Graybeal and Alaimaleata earned Junior College All America honors last season as well as Graybeal was a first-team selection while Alaimaleata was on the second team.

“We are proud to learn that Nicole and Deddiy were named All-Americans,” LCSC associate head coach Burdette Greeny said.  “These individual honors are well earned and are products of this team’s successful run deep into the postseason.  As we always do, we as a program, from the players to the coaches, look at these awards as a team award.  If it wasn’t for every player on the team who worked so hard over the course of the entire year, we wouldn’t have done the things we did to put these individuals on our team in this position to garner such awards.”

LCSC just wrapped up play in the NAIA National Tournament where it advanced to the quarterfinals before it lost to top-ranked Lee. The Warriors finished the season at 31-3, its best all-time win percentage mark, and won both the conference regular-season and tournament titles for the fourth straight year under coach Jen Greeny.

Graybeal is 6-foot-2 middle blocker from Spokane and was in her first year of the program after she transferred from Spokane Falls Community College. She was named MVP of the Frontier Conference for her outstanding season.

Graybeal played in all but one match this season and finished second on the team in kills with 328 and was second on the team in hitting percentage at .341. She also was second in service aces with 50 and led the team in both solo blocks with 29 and block assists with 115. She also tied for fifth in digs at 112 and had 13 assists.

Nicole was a force in the middle,” Burdette Greeny said.  “A player like her that is so complete in her game, from blocking, to serving, to ball control, to her offensive skills, makes other teams focus so much attention on stopping her that it opens up opportunities for all of our players.  Nicole has continued to improve every day she has been with us since this past January.  We believe that there is even more to her game.  Nicole is a joy to coach and deserves this honor through all of her hard work.”

Graybeal’s 115 block assists ranks fourth on LCSC’s single-season record list and her 144 total blocks ranks third.

Graybeal averaged nearly nine kills a match and hit double figures in kills in 10 of the last 13 matches she played in. She posted a season-high 19 kills in the semifinals of the conference tournament and had four or more service aces in a match five times. She also had a season-high of 10 block assists and four solo blocks.

Deddiy AlaimaleataAlaimaleata is a 6-1 right-side hitter from Pago Pago, American Samoa. She attended the New Mexico Military Institute for two seasons before she transferred to LCSC.

Alaimaleata finished third on the team in kills with 314 but with a solid .358 hitting percentage, which ranks seventh on the program’s single-season list. She also had 58 assists, which ranked fourth on the team, and 58 digs. She had 13 solo blocks, which was second to Graybeal, and 70 block assists, which was third on the team. Her 83 total blocks also ranked third.  She also had one service aces during the season.

“Deddiy had a terrific season for us,” Burdette Greeny said.  “She is blessed with some amazing physical skills.  The game comes easy to Deddiy.  We found out how good she was in the preseason when we were limiting her swings by telling her all she could do was off-speed and she still racked up kill after kill in practice.  We also believe Deddiy can improve in becoming more consistent and not taking anything for granted.  Anyone who witnessed her play at the National Tournament this past week would agree that there is no reason Deddiy couldn’t become a First Team All-American next season.  We are proud she was awarded this honor and are glad she is part of our family.”

Alaimaleata averaged 2.7 kills per match, but was unstoppable in her big matches. She recorded 13 matches with double-digit kills and hit at least .400 in 11 of those matches. Her lowest hitting percentage with double-digit kills was .308

Alaimaleata posted season-highs of 20 kills, .883 hitting percentage, four assists, seven digs, two solo blocks and eight block assists. At the national tournament, she had back-to-back matches with 18 kills.

Columbia of Missouri setter Paula Ferreira was named the Player of the Year, while Cal Baptist’s Ryan McGuyre was named Coach of the Year.
